Jerry recently passed this article along to me: It’s Apple vs. Google in the battle over the future of computing.

You know – this is one of those times where Apple is truly at a loss. I know I’m not exactly an Apple sympathizer or anything, but think about it. They release one mobile device a year (now two, with the iPad) and those new releases are really just updates to the existing platform. Google gave their operating system to every manufacturer that wanted it… and they all wanted it. Motorola alone will release two more Android handsets on Verizon wireless in the next three months. LG has committed to 20 (yeah, twenty) new Android handsets released worldwide by 2011. HTC isn’t slowing down either. And their EVO 4G simply outclasses the new iPhone4.

The iPhone4 was equaled or surpassed on all counts before it was even released by the Evo 4G. This has never happened to Apple before. It’s going to hurt.

Hopefully Apple has built their army of fanboys (and girls) strong enough to weather the next year of mediocrity. I hope so – the world needs competition from innovators like Apple.
