iPhone4: The beginning of the end.

Jerry recently passed this article along to me: It’s Apple vs. Google in the battle over the future of computing.

You know – this is one of those times where Apple is truly at a loss. I know I’m not exactly an Apple sympathizer or anything, but think about it. They release one mobile device a year (now two, with the iPad) and those new releases are really just updates to the existing platform. Google gave their operating system to every manufacturer that wanted it… and they all wanted it. Motorola alone will release two more Android handsets on Verizon wireless in the next three months. LG has committed to 20 (yeah, twenty) new Android handsets released worldwide by 2011. HTC isn’t slowing down either. And their EVO 4G simply outclasses the new iPhone4.

The iPhone4 was equaled or surpassed on all counts before it was even released by the Evo 4G. This has never happened to Apple before. It’s going to hurt.

Hopefully Apple has built their army of fanboys (and girls) strong enough to weather the next year of mediocrity. I hope so – the world needs competition from innovators like Apple.

Windows 7 Upgrade Excitement and Trepidation

Windows 7 Ultimate Signature Edition

Oh yes!  I have Windows 7 Ultimate (signature edition… whatever that is) in hand.  I’ve actually had it for nearly a week now and I’ve not installed it yet.  I can’t say why, really.  I’m excited about it.  We have the release candidate running quite nicely on the office print server.  I’m currently running Windows Vista Business and I know Windows 7 is better than it.

Yet I remain timid.

If I search my feelings and think back, I’ve had this feeling before…. several times.  It’s the fear of the upgrade:  the fear of data loss (work data, in this case – not just photos and my WoW install,)  the fear of performing the upgrade only to realize that something didn’t tick correctly and have to format and re-install anyway.  I don’t worry with linux, I don’t even worry with the office Mac… and I hate it.  Still, I worry with Windows.

Do I worry because I care too much?  There might be something to this.  If I used the Macbook for more than website testing and occasional browsing, then I would care about what might occur in an upgrade failure.  If my netbook were more of a computer and less of a toy, I would care about a Ubuntu upgrade meltdown.  I actually use the Windows machine.  It is a tool, not some glammed up wanna-be computer or a child’s plaything – my PCs are valuable to me.

So I’ll meditate on this upgrade.  I’ll spend the money and buy a virgin hard drive.  I’ll install Win 7 clean and spend time transferring files and reinstalling software.  I’ll genuinely enjoy the process.  I’ll set the Vista drive on a shelf – just in case – and I’ll be secure in my upgrade.

I am exited and timid about Windows 7…. and I’m completely happy with that.

I must first say that Lana nor I posed Avery for these photos – she truly gravitates toward any computer in the house.  She will place herself between us and a computer if she can and will show extreme anger when we move her or shut the lid of the laptop, etc.  Aside from watching choppy YouTube videos and uncomfortably browsing the internet in your car while poaching a WiFi connection from Starbucks, a 9″ Dell Netbook running Ubuntu and Cheese can be your baby’s favorite toy, too!

Anyhoo – I guess the geek does not fall far from the tree– 17 months old and I already fear my house will be host to a LAN party any day now.  *sigh*  She’ll be pulling mobs and raiding with uncle Jason and aunt Teresa soon…

I wish i had access to this tool (I wish I’d just thought to code it myself, even) five years ago.  I can’t count the number of times I’ve had to re-type a client’s text so that it displays correctly in a design (converting text to upper-case, reversing letters, etc.)…. and since I’m a horrible typist, my output is often riddled with mistakes.   This is brilliant: copy text, apply filters, transform the text, copy the new text.  Fin.

Uppercaseit.com… Because nobody wants to retype it!

A cobbler’s shoes are never fixed.  However, he must still walk in them.  The Core Business website is not near to a “launch stage” yet, but it has launched.  I’ll continue working on it when I’m not focused on our clients’ projects.  Comments are appreciated, but know that it is a perpetual work in progress…  maybe I’ll develop enough of a habit updating it that I’ll update this stinking blog a little more.  Wouldn’t that be swell?

After many years of purposely avoiding FaceBook, a client request has forced me into creating an account.  I tried to get out of it, but apparently “Core Business” is not a valid name for FaceBook… how it knows this, I can’t say.  What I do know is that it forced me to create a personal account to get the task done.

That said – apparently Core Business is in the business of creating FaceBook Apps now. =P

Look for the new Big Idea TV FaceBook App coming soon.  For now, if you like playing Cricket (the version with darts) you should check out my Cricketron FaceBook App: http://apps.facebook.com/cricketron/

visualflood.com

You all know that I rarely use CoreyFoster.com to promote a site I’ve worked on, so please take this post as an endorsement for a site representative of a concept I believe all of us should keep close to our hearts and minds – especially when conducting business.

I (all of us at Core Business) have the opportunity to work with tons of companies – most with the singular goal of profit.  This is not to say they are greedy, just that they don’t really think about anything beyond the survival of their business, profitability being essential in that regard.

That stated, It is rare to work with a client cut from a different cloth who truly has the well-being of others as a primary focus instead of their own bottom-line… a client who understands that if you do put people and charitable organizations first, profitability will naturally follow.  This is exactly what my friend and client, Kevin Adams, and his company Visual Flood is all about.

My desk sporting a new 6x11 Wacom Intuos3 tablet

So I finally replaced my workhorse Wacom Intuos 9×12.  While I’ll miss the old one, it was serial and the new office compy doesn’t have a serial port.  So I got this sweet Intuos3 6×11 widescreen-capable goddess (essential for my dual-monitors) for $109 (effing crazy price) on eBay – it has twice the resolution of my old Intuos model and only a little less real estate (losing inches from the top and bottom doesn’t really affect my workstyle.)

BTW: If you’re interested in getting a similar deal, I recommend patience: I had been monitoring newly listed tablets for over a month before this unit graced me with its presence and price. I also recommend the use of Gixen eBay Sniper

Anyhoo – Wacom has come a long way with this new tablet – immediately noticeable is that the build quality is much more solid compared to Intuos1 and Intuos2 models.  The grip-pen is a little beefier and feels much more controllable in my hand.  Wacom has also included an array of 4 buttons and a scroll strip on both sides of the tablet that I can’t wait to put to use.  The seller even included a felt nib in the cache of replacement nibs he sent – and I have to say: my world is effing changed.

I’m so excited about this thing that I resent the stinking pile of non-graphic work I have to do today…. I really needed it yesterday morning. *sigh*
